Maureen Kernan, LCSW
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker providing individual and family therapy for adults and adolescents on a variety of issues, including anxiety, depression, grief and loss issues, relationship problems, life changes, and parenting challenges. I have been in private practice in Chicago's West loop since 2009 and also have a history of working with children, adolescents, and families in child welfare and school settings. I earned my MSW from Jane Addams College of Social Work at UIC, and later went on to pursue advanced clinical training at the Institute for Clinical Social Work.
I work from a developmental, psychodynamic perspective and also incorporate strategies from Mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to try to help clients understand how one's past experiences and relationship patterns have contributed to their present struggle and to help clients understand their own story and how that is related to who they are today. Understanding ourselves and accepting ourselves fully with compassion are important steps towards healing and creating change. That change may be in one's own thoughts and beliefs, in one's feelings and ability to cope with stress and anxiety, or in improving one's relationships and learning how to communicate effectively. Whatever your individual needs are, we will work together to understand them and find a way to move in the direction of your goals.
I strive to create a relaxed, trusting and supportive environment where clients feel safe to discuss any concerns and tell their story without judgement. I truly respect and feel privileged to join my clients on their journey to greater self-understanding, healing, and growth. If you are considering therapy to help you in your journey, feel free to reach out to set up an appointment or with any questions you may have.
